Sanna Marin

Sanna Marin is Prime Minister of Finland; she was born in Helsinki in 1985 but grew up in Pirkkala, a small town near Tampere. Her parents split up when she was very young, the family faced financial problems, and her father struggled with alcoholism. After her parents separated, Marin was brought up by her mother and her female partner.

She is the first person in her family to go to university. Marin graduated from Prikkala High School in 2004 and studied Administrative Sciences at the University of Tampere.

Political career

In 2006 she joined the Social Democratic Youth Party, from 2010 to 2012 was vice president of the party.

In 2012, at just 27 years old, Marin became head of the city administration in Tampere, which has around 230,000 people. While still the head of the Tampere city council, Marin was elected as a member of the Parliament for the Social Democrat Party in 2015, representing the region of Pirkanmaa. Four years later, she was reelected.

From June through December 2019, she held the position of Transport and Communications Minister.

Prime Minister of Finland

On December 10, 2019, Sanna Marin became the prime minister of Finland, making the 34-year-old the youngest prime minister the country has ever had, the third woman to lead the country, and also the youngest serving prime minister in the world.

A majority of the ministers in her five-party cabinet are women (12-19).

COVID 19 Pandemic

Marin’s cabinet invoked the state of emergency in Finland to alleviate the epidemic. She is taking a practical and innovative approach to fighting coronavirus.

Perhaps inspired by millennials’ outlook, she has employed influencers to disseminate pertinent information on social media. Finland is the only country globally that has defined social media as “a critical operator”.

She is also vegetarian, environmental, and feminist — the icon of progressive ideas, inclusivity, and Feminist.
