Jacinda Ardern – Prime Minister of New Zealand

Versión en Español

Jacinda Ardern is one of the most important political women globally. She is well-known for her actions during the pandemic, her leadership in the face of a terrible terrorist attack, and her management of a volcanic eruption.

She was born in Hamilton – New Zealand and grew up as a Mormon, which she abandoned years later because it conflicted with her liberal ideas. In 2001 she graduated with a degree in Communication Studies in Politics and Public Relations from the University of Waikato.

At a very young age, she recognized herself as a feminist, and from the age of 17, she began to participate in politics. She became a representative leader of the youth sector of the Labor Party and by 2008 was elected president of the International Union of Young Socialists, where she had the opportunity to travel to several countries, including Jordan, Israel, Algeria, and China.

She returned to Parliament in 2011, and since 2014 began to assume different ministries (Justice, Childhood, Microenterprise, Arts, and Culture). In 2017 she positioned herself as leader of the opposition and leader of the Labor Party and began her campaign for the position of Prime Minister.

She won the election by a large majority, and on October 26, 2017, she positioned herself as the youngest Prime Minister of New Zealand and the third woman to assume this position.

Terrorist attack

On March 15, 2019, 51 people were shot and 49 injured at two mosques in Christchurch. Jacinda demonstrated her compassion and empathy, comforting the victims, meeting their funeral expenses, and banning gun sales in record time. Her leadership was praised nationally and internationally.

On January 19, 2018, Jacinda announced the birth of her first-born child, becoming the first pregnant Prime Minister in office. On June 21, 2018, she gave birth to a baby girl named Neve Te Aroha. Neve is an English form of the Irish name Niamh, meaning ‘bright’; Aroha in Maori means ‘love,’ and “Te Aroha” is a mountain in the Kaimai Ranges near Morrinsville, Ardern’s hometown.

Pandemic management

New Zealand is considered one of the countries that acted more quickly and timely in the face of the Coronavirus, closing its borders and guaranteeing the safety and quality of life of its inhabitants. It was the first country to eliminate cases of contagion and gradually return to normality, highlighting its time management.

Here, I want to share some of her inspirational quotes:
